A Canadian study permit allows eligible foreign nationals to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) in Canada.
Receiving a letter of acceptance from a Canadian school is an important step, but admission alone does not guarantee approval of a study permit. Applicants must demonstrate that they meet IRCC’s eligibility requirements and provide sufficient evidence supporting the purpose of their studies, financial capacity and temporary resident intentions.
IRCC currently requires study permit applicants to demonstrate enrolment at a DLI, sufficient funds for tuition and living expenses, compliance with Canadian law and, where applicable, medical and other admissibility requirements.
What Is Required for a Canadian Study Permit?
Depending on your circumstances, your application may include:
A valid letter of acceptance from a DLI, proof of financial support, passport and identity documents, academic records, evidence explaining your study plan, a Provincial or Territorial Attestation Letter where required, and additional documents depending on your country of residence and personal circumstances.
Applicants should also understand whether their chosen program may qualify them for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) after graduation. Being admitted to a DLI does not necessarily mean every program offered by that institution is PGWP eligible.
Study Permit Extensions
International students who need additional time to complete their studies may need to apply to extend their study permit before their current authorization expires.
Changes involving schools, programs or immigration status should be reviewed carefully because different rules may apply depending on the circumstances.
