Becoming a Canadian citizen and maintaining valid permanent resident documentation are important but separate immigration processes.
Topic Immigration assists permanent residents with Canadian citizenship applications, PR card renewals and related immigration history reviews.
Canadian Citizenship Applications
Most adult applicants must satisfy requirements involving permanent resident status, physical presence, tax filing where required, and applicable language and citizenship knowledge requirements.
For a standard adult citizenship application, IRCC currently requires at least 1,095 days of physical presence in Canada during the five-year eligibility period. Adults aged 18 to 54 generally must also meet the applicable language and citizenship test requirements.
Travel history and previous temporary resident time can affect the physical-presence calculation.
PR Card Renewal
A PR card is evidence of Canadian permanent resident status and is normally required for commercial transportation back to Canada.
IRCC currently advises permanent residents to apply for renewal when the card has expired or will expire in less than nine months.
Importantly, an expired PR card does not by itself mean that a person has lost permanent resident status.
However, applicants with extensive absences from Canada should consider the permanent resident residency obligation before submitting a renewal application.
