More Than 50,000 French-Language Invitations: Why Category Eligibility Is Becoming as Important as CRS
Canada’s Express Entry system in 2026 is increasingly difficult to evaluate based on CRS scores alone.
Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) continues to conduct program-specific rounds, including Canadian Experience Class and Provincial Nominee Program draws, while also using category-based selection to target candidates who meet specific economic priorities.
In a category-based round, IRCC first identifies Express Entry candidates who meet the requirements of a designated category and then ranks eligible candidates according to their Comprehensive Ranking System score.
The 2026 categories include:
- French-language proficiency
- Healthcare and social services occupations
- STEM occupations
- Trade occupations
- Education occupations
- Transport occupations
- Physicians with Canadian work experience
- Senior managers with Canadian work experience
- Researchers with Canadian work experience
- Skilled military recruits
Several new categories were introduced for 2026, including physicians, researchers and senior managers with Canadian work experience, transport occupations and skilled military recruits. IRCC also increased the work-experience requirement for renewed occupation-based categories from six months to one year.
2026 Category-Based Draw Summary
Based on dedicated category-specific rounds conducted through late September 2026:
| Category | Draws | Total ITAs | CRS Cut-off Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| French-language proficiency | 10 | 50,500 | 382–420 |
| Healthcare & Social Services | 3 | 11,500 | 467–475 |
| Trades | 1 | 6,500 | 476-477 |
| Senior Managers – Canadian Experience | 3 | 1,000 | 389–429 |
| Physicians – Canadian Experience | 3 | 891 | 169–223 |
| Transport | 1 | 300 | 470 |
| Skilled Military Recruits | 1 | 4 | 368 |
| Total | 22 | 70,695 | – |
The CRS figures above represent the CRS score of the lowest-ranked candidate invited in each round, not the full score distribution of all invited candidates.
French-Language Proficiency Dominates 2026 Category Selection
French-language proficiency has been the largest category by a significant margin.
Approximately 50,500 ITAs have been issued through dedicated French-language rounds, representing roughly three quarters of all category-specific invitations during the period reviewed.
CRS cut-offs have ranged from approximately:
382 to 420
Candidates must achieve at least NCLC 7 in all four French-language abilities to meet the French-language category requirement.
For candidates who can realistically reach NCLC 7, French has therefore become an increasingly important Express Entry strategy.
Healthcare and Social Services
Healthcare and Social Services remains another major category.
Approximately 11,500 ITAs have been issued through dedicated rounds, with CRS cut-offs ranging from:
467 to 475
For example, IRCC issued 3,500 invitations on September 4, 2026, with a CRS cut-off of 475.
For renewed occupation-based categories, candidates generally need at least 12 months of qualifying work experience accumulated within the previous three years.
Senior Managers with Canadian Work Experience
The Senior Managers category is one of the notable additions in 2026.
CRS cut-offs have declined from:
429 → 392 → 389
On September 16, 2026, IRCC invited 250 candidates at a CRS cut-off of 389.
Eligible occupations currently include NOC 00012, 00013, 00014 and 00015.
Candidates must have qualifying Canadian work experience to meet this category’s requirements.
Physicians with Canadian Work Experience
The Physicians category has produced some of the lowest CRS cut-offs in the Express Entry system during 2026.
Dedicated draw cut-offs have ranged approximately from:
169 to 223
These unusually low CRS scores should not be interpreted to mean that any candidate with a CRS near 200 can qualify.
A candidate must first qualify for one of the immigration programs managed through Express Entry and must independently satisfy the physician-category work-experience requirements.
How Does This Compare With CEC?
The difference between regular CEC selection and category-based selection can be substantial.
For example, the September 1, 2026 Canadian Experience Class round issued 2,000 invitations with a CRS cut-off of 521.
By comparison:
| Selection Type | Recent 2026 CRS Level |
|---|---|
| CEC | Low 500s |
| Trades | 476-477 |
| Healthcare | 467–475 |
| Transport | 470 |
| French | 382–420 |
| Senior Managers | 389–429 |
| Physicians | 169–223 |
This demonstrates why CRS should no longer be considered in isolation.
What About STEM, Education and Researchers?
STEM, Education and Researchers with Canadian work experience are official 2026 categories, but no dedicated category round had been conducted for these categories through the period covered by this report.
This does not necessarily mean that no qualifying candidates have received ITAs.
IRCC specifically explains that a separate category-based round may not be required if enough highly ranked candidates who qualify for a category are already being invited through general or program-specific rounds.
A Better Way to Assess Express Entry in 2026
Rather than asking only:
“What is my CRS score?”
candidates should increasingly consider:
1. Which Express Entry program am I eligible for?
2. What is my correct NOC?
3. Do I qualify for an occupation-based category?
4. Do I have qualifying Canadian work experience for one of the new categories?
5. Could I reach NCLC 7 in French?
6. What CRS level has recently been required within my specific category?
IRCC has also stated that Canadian Experience Class selection remains an important priority in 2026 as part of its focus on transitioning temporary residents with Canadian work experience to permanent residence.
The result is an Express Entry system in which occupation, Canadian work experience, French-language ability and CRS must now be assessed together.
FAQ
Q1. Is a CRS score of 480 enough for Express Entry in 2026?
It depends on the type of round for which the candidate qualifies. A score of 480 may be below recent CEC thresholds but could fall within the range observed in certain occupation-based categories.
Q2. Does learning French really help with Express Entry?
French-language proficiency has been one of the most significant Express Entry categories in 2026. Candidates must generally achieve at least NCLC 7 in all four language abilities and must also qualify for an Express Entry-managed immigration program.
Q3. Does having an eligible occupation guarantee an ITA?
No. Candidates must first qualify for Express Entry and satisfy the category requirements. Eligible candidates are then ranked by CRS within the relevant selection group.
